Following years of investment in the arts in the north west, this is Bruntwood's second year of production sponsorship of in Leeds, after successfully supporting Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the Playhouse in 2006. The company continue to build their commercial presence in the city on the back of sustained success in Manchester and Liverpool, during which time they've forged ever-closer links with the region's arts scene as the business has grown.
Bruntwood, which now boasts 3 large office properties in Leeds city centre, and over 80 across the north of England, sees investing in both the tangible and cultural fabric of the areas in which they operate as a logical step to ensuring the long-term prosperity of the region as a whole.
As Leeds Director Richard Burgess puts it: "Supporting the arts is not the normal behaviour of your average property firm, but fortunately, we’re not your average property firm. We’ve always done things differently, from the way we develop our buildings, to the way we treat our customers. Because of this approach, we understand that we can only be successful if the region we're working in is successful. We have an obligation as a thriving company to put something back and this philosophy operates on all levels, including supporting the arts, which is an important segment of the wider community".
Each year, Bruntwood hands 10 percent of its profits over to communities, a large portion of which has traditionally been allocated to the arts in Manchester and Liverpool. Now that their nose is leading them east, Leeds can expect a slice of the pie. The company's focus on Leeds is the latest stage in their strategy to expand their business within the M62 corridor and this proactive development of regional arts and other community activity is a key element to the success of the move.
The prognosis for Leeds is good if Bruntwood's contribution to the arts in the north-west is anything to go by. Indeed, with the company’s recent involvement with the up and coming Manchester International Festival and their continued support of the likes of The Royal Exchange in Manchester and The Everyman Playhouse in Liverpool, it is clear that Bruntwood are committed to their support of the arts, which is sure to continue in Yorkshire.
