Bruntwood have signed up to sponsor Art Treasures in Manchester: 150 years on at Manchester Art Gallery, an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the largest art exhibition to ever take place in the UK.
The original Art Treasures exhibition took place in Manchester in 1857 after a group of local businessmen decided they needed to enhance the image of the city as a cultural centre and demonstrates it’s central location and excellent transport links. They constructed a temporary glass pavilion the size of Crystal Palace and filled it with over 16,000 works of art ranging from paintings, sculpture, metalwork, photography, textiles, glass, furniture and jewellery.
Amazingly it took only 15 months from idea to opening and was a huge success attracting 1.3 million visitors including Queen Victoria, Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickens and Louis Napoleon.
One of the most famous pieces exhibited was Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child with Saint John and the Angels. This iconic painting will return to Manchester as part of the anniversary exhibition, Art Treasures in Manchester: 150 years on.
Other paintings will include work from a range a British artists including Hogarth, Gainsborough, Turner and Constable along with decorative pieces including early Wedgwood ceramics, Renaissance metalwork and European armour. The gallery will also be running a wide range of events alongside the exhibition including talks, tours, family workshops and performances by the Hallé and as sponsors we will be involving our customers, staff and suppliers in the activities.
